Art is so unique to everyone, every space and every family that coexists in a single home. Choosing art that fits your home can often be the most daunting part of a home design, finding something your eyes will love to look at every day, no matter your mood. As a contemporary artist who commissions art for homes all over the globe - I know this struggle all too well.
The tips I give to those who want it never go ary, so i'd like to share some of my most common tips of choosing home for any interior design project.
CONSIDER SCALE AND SIZE
WHAT SORT OF ADVICE CAN YOU OFFER ON CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZED ARTWORK FOR A ROOM?
I like to recommend to really think about you room and the placement of the artwork’s in the space. I suggest to get some blue tape/or even little blobs of blue tak to roughly mark out the dimensions of what you believe would be the perfect sized artwork for the wall.
Then take a photo of the space and visit your gallery with these measurements and the photo. There are also apps on the market where you can place the sized artwork into your space to give you an idea of the completed look.
BLENDING TIME PERIODS
BECAUSE YOU MAY HAVE, SAY, A FEDERATION HOME THERE’S NO NEED TO AVOID CONTEMPORARY ART STYLES … WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS KEY TO KEEPING YOUR ART STYLISTICALLY SYMPATHETIC OR COHESIVE WITH YOUR HOME?
I love the blending of time periods and styles and enjoy the interest this brings to a home there is nothing better than an opulent federation style home with beautiful architectural lines and embellishment’s then painted out in a contemporary white/grey with modern furniture and big hits of vibrant statement abstract art work’s.
The artwork is the essence of the room – no matter what your style. The artwork sets everything apart it will give your space that uniqueness of you and bring your story all together. Original Artwork’s give energy, emotion and engagement to all that live and visit the space. Artwork lift moods and create an atmosphere of interest and awe.
When acquiring a work make sure you LOVE the artwork and it to speaks to you, stirs your emotions and resonates with you individually.
FROM AN ARTIST’S POINT OF VIEW, IS IT WRONG TO PICK AN ARTWORK BECAUSE IT MATCHES YOUR SOFA?!
YES – absolutely for me - But if you LOVE it is ok! As long as there is some sort of an emotional attachment that resonates with you personally – the art has done its job.
SAY YOU HAVE AN ARTWORK YOU LOVE AND YOU MOVE INTO A NEW HOME, WHAT’S THE BEST APPROACH WHEN IT COMES TO BUILDING YOUR DÉCOR AROUND A PARTICULAR PIECE?
It is always best when clients start with the artwork when fitting out a space. The artwork/s can then inform the rest of the space from colour palette’s, soft furnishings to sculptural lamps & pieces.
Art can really add the ‘wow’ factor to a space and pull together the entire design concept, so that it flows smoothly throughout a space.
